Change versus Expertise

It is September 15th, somehow this date resonates with title. Let me explain, part of who we are is due to the changes that we experience in life, school has an important contribution.

Year after year I celebrated this date as a first step in my personal journey. This year is no exception, actually 2010 represents a major milestone for me. Now back to you, my reader what is in this post worthwhile to read?

Look into your life and tell me NOW what is your major strenght? It is not easy,  you spend day after day repeating some program, you sometimes stop and ask for clarification, about the why, not for long though. Why did you go to college? Because you want an education, to find a well paid job and to become a manager, director, consutant, etc.

In my case change was the name of the game, my profession proves our capabilty to do this, however is it enough to just switch to another field?

In my opinion, it is not what you think about you and your expertise is more about who pays you, the client, employer or partner. In reality with the new generation coming with different desires, I can observe that patience is not a virtue, so it is easy to speculate this and spread the myth that anybody can perform in any conditions, motivation being the only condition.

So an easy reality check is the following: count the number of hours spent with your clients, employer, partner performing and see if is close to 10.000. (read the story in Outliers, Gladwell demostrates this)

If you get close, you can claim expertise on this field, otherwise enjoy the journey, mastership is coming.
